About Bundesliga
Overview
The Bundesliga is the top professional football league in Germany, organized by the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL). Founded in 1963, the league consists of 18 clubs who play in a double round-robin format across a season running from August to May. Renowned for its high average attendance (the highest of any football league in the world), passionate fan culture, affordable ticket prices, and 50+1 ownership rule that keeps clubs in the hands of their members, the Bundesliga is widely regarded as one of the best and most fan-friendly leagues in global football.
History & Major Events
The Bundesliga has been overwhelmingly dominated by Bayern Munich, who have won the title in an unprecedented run of 11 consecutive Bundesliga championships from 2013 to 2023. Borussia Dortmund has been Bayern's most consistent rival, winning back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 and reaching the Champions League final in 2013. The Bundesliga has produced legendary managers including Jupp Heynckes, who led Bayern to the treble in 2012-13, and Jürgen Klopp, who transformed Dortmund with his "Gegenpressing" style. Bayer Leverkusen made history in the 2023-24 season by becoming the first Bundesliga club to go unbeaten throughout the entire season, winning their maiden Bundesliga title under coach Xabi Alonso. Germany has won the FIFA World Cup four times (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014), with many Bundesliga players forming the core of those squads.
Records
Bayern Munich holds the record for the most Bundesliga titles with over 33 championships. Gerd Müller, Bayern's legendary striker, holds the record for the most Bundesliga goals with 365 in 427 games. The highest single-season scoring record is held by Robert Lewandowski, who scored 41 goals in the 2020-21 season, surpassing Müller's 40-year-old record of 40 goals. Bayern Munich's 9-2 aggregate score against Hamburger SV in 2015 was one of the biggest winning margins. Signal Iduna Park (Borussia Dortmund) has the largest regular crowd in world football, with a capacity of over 81,000 including standing.
Best Players
The Bundesliga has produced a wealth of world-class talent. Gerd Müller, nicknamed "Der Bomber," remains one of the greatest goalscorers in football history. Franz Beckenbauer, who played for Bayern Munich in the 1970s, revolutionized the role of the libero (sweeper). Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was another legendary Bayern and Germany captain. In the modern era, Oliver Kahn and Manuel Neuer defined the goalkeeper position. Thomas Müller has spent his entire career at Bayern Munich and is one of the most decorated players in Bundesliga history. Robert Lewandowski, during his time at Dortmund and Bayern, became the most prolific scorer in the modern Bundesliga era. Other legends include Michael Ballack, Lothar Matthäus, and current star Jamal Musiala.
