About Eredivisie
Overview
The Eredivisie is the top professional football league in the Netherlands, organized by the Eredivisie CV. Founded in 1956, the league consists of 18 clubs competing in a double round-robin format from August to May. Despite its relatively small market size, the Eredivisie has an outsized global reputation for producing technically gifted players and playing attractive, attacking football — a philosophy rooted in Total Football (Totaalvoetbal), the tactical revolution pioneered by Ajax and the Dutch national team in the 1970s.
History & Major Events
Ajax Amsterdam is the most successful club in Eredivisie history, having also won the European Cup/Champions League four times (1971, 1972, 1973, and 1995). The 1970s Ajax team — featuring Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, and coached by Rinus Michels — are considered one of the greatest club sides in history, popularizing Total Football and influencing the global game for decades. PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord have been consistent challengers, with PSV winning the European Cup in 1988 and Feyenoord triumphing in the 1970 edition. Ajax's remarkable 1994-95 season, when they went unbeaten to win the league and Champions League, featured a squad of extraordinary talent including a young Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars, and Clarence Seedorf. Feyenoord made a triumphant return to European glory by winning the UEFA Conference League in 2022.
Records
Ajax holds the record for the most Eredivisie titles with over 36 championships. Willy van der Kuijlen is the all-time top scorer in Eredivisie history with 311 goals, playing primarily for PSV Eindhoven. The highest-scoring Eredivisie match saw Ajax defeat VVV-Venlo 13-0 in 2020, the biggest win in the league's modern history. Ajax's average European results remain the benchmark for Dutch clubs. De Klassieker, the match between Ajax and Feyenoord, is one of the most celebrated club rivalries in world football.
Best Players
The Eredivisie has produced an extraordinary number of world-class players. Johan Cruyff, widely considered the greatest Dutch footballer of all time, defined Ajax's philosophy in the 1970s. Marco van Basten, another Ajax product, went on to win three Ballon d'Or awards and a European Championship with the Netherlands. Other Eredivisie legends include Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, Clarence Seedorf, and Arjen Robben. In recent years, players like Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, and Donny van de Beek emerged from the famed Ajax academy to become world stars, while Virgil van Dijk began his career at Groningen and Celtic before becoming one of the world's best defenders.
