About Liga Portugal

Overview

Liga Portugal, officially known as Liga Portugal Betclic for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional football division in Portugal. Founded in 1934, it is one of the longest-running top-flight leagues in Europe and is organized by the Liga Portugal association. The league consists of 18 clubs who compete in a home-and-away round-robin format across a season that runs from August to May.

History & Major Events

Liga Portugal has been dominated by three historic powerhouses — Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP — commonly referred to as the "Big Three." Together, they have won virtually every title in the competition's history. The league gained global recognition in the 1960s and 1970s when Benfica, led by the legendary Eusébio, became a European superpower. Porto's back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles in 1987 and 2004 (the latter under José Mourinho) brought further prestige to Portuguese football. Sporting CP ended a 19-year title drought in the 2020–21 season, their first championship since 2002, marking a major milestone in recent league history.

Records

Benfica holds the record for the most Liga Portugal titles, with over 37 championships. Porto and Sporting CP follow closely behind. The highest attendance record was set at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon. Porto's José Mourinho guided the club to back-to-back titles in 2002–03 and 2003–04 before leading them to Champions League glory. Peyroteo, a legendary Sporting striker from the 1940s, remains one of the competition's all-time top scorers.

Best Players

Liga Portugal has produced and showcased some of the greatest footballers in history. Eusébio, Benfica's iconic striker from the 1960s, remains the league's most celebrated homegrown talent. Cristiano Ronaldo began his professional career at Sporting CP before moving to Manchester United, going on to become the greatest goalscorer in football history. Other legendary figures include Luís Figo, Rui Costa, Fernando Peyroteo, and more recently players like Bruno Fernandes, João Félix, and Rúben Dias who developed in the league before becoming global stars.
