Overview

Ligue 1 is the top professional football division in France, organized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). Founded in 1932, the league consists of 18 clubs (recently reduced from 20) who compete in a double round-robin format from August to May. Often called "Ligue 1 McDonald's" or "Ligue 1 Uber Eats" for sponsorship reasons, it is one of the top five football leagues in Europe and has historically produced some of the world's most technically gifted players.

History & Major Events

Ligue 1 was dominated in its early decades by clubs like Saint-Etienne, who won 10 titles between 1957 and 1981. Olympique de Marseille became the first and only French club to win the UEFA Champions League in 1993 under Raymond Goethals, one of French football's defining moments. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) transformed into a global powerhouse following the Qatari Sports Investment takeover in 2011, going on to win an unprecedented run of league titles. Monaco briefly interrupted PSG's dominance with a remarkable title win in 2016-17, while Lille (LOSC) shocked the footballing world by winning the 2020-21 title ahead of PSG. PSG's signing of Neymar for a world-record €222 million in 2017 and Kylian Mbappé marked a seismic shift in world football's financial landscape.

Records

PSG holds the record for the most consecutive league titles in the modern era, winning the championship multiple times in a row since 2012. Saint-Etienne remains the most successful club historically with 10 titles. Delio Onnis is the all-time top scorer in Ligue 1 history with 299 goals. The largest stadium in the league is the Parc des Princes in Paris. PSG's 9-0 victory over Guingamp in 2018 is one of the biggest winning margins in recent league history.

Ligue 1 has been the stage for some of the world's finest footballers. Kylian Mbappé, born in Paris and developed through Monaco's academy, became one of the greatest players of his generation, dominating the league with his pace and finishing. Neymar brought global stardom to PSG. Legendary figures include Thierry Henry, who developed at Monaco, Zinedine Zidane, who played for Cannes and Bordeaux, Ronaldo Nazario who played at PSG, and more recent stars such as Karim Benzema (Lyon), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Saint-Etienne), and Edinson Cavani (PSG).
