About Premier League
Overview
The Premier League is the top professional football division in England, organized by the Premier League limited company. Formed in 1992 as a breakaway from the Football League, the Premier League consists of 20 clubs who compete in a double round-robin format from August to May. It is the most watched and most commercially valuable football league in the world, broadcast in over 200 territories and generating billions in annual revenue. Known as "the best league in the world" by many, it is celebrated for its relentless pace, physical intensity, and world-class talent.
History & Major Events
The Premier League era began in the 1992-93 season with Manchester United winning the inaugural title under Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester United went on to dominate the Premier League's early decades, winning 13 titles under Ferguson, including three consecutive championships in 1999, 2000, and 2001, and the treble in 1998-99 (Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League). Arsenal's "Invincibles" season in 2003-04, when they went the entire 38-game league campaign unbeaten under Arsène Wenger, remains one of the greatest achievements in football history. The arrival of Roman Abramovich at Chelsea in 2003 signaled a new era of foreign investment. Manchester City's takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008 transformed them into serial champions. Leicester City's extraordinary 5000-1 title win in 2015-16 under Claudio Ranieri is considered the greatest sporting upset in modern history. Liverpool's first league title in 30 years in 2019-20 ended one of football's most famous droughts.
Records
Manchester City hold the record for the most Premier League points in a single season with 100 points in 2017-18 and have been the dominant force of the 2010s and 2020s. Manchester United hold the most Premier League titles with 13. Alan Shearer is the all-time top scorer with 260 goals. Erling Haaland broke the single-season goals record with 36 goals in 2022-23. The highest-scoring match in Premier League history was Manchester United 9-0 Southampton in 2021. Liverpool set the record for the longest unbeaten home run at Anfield. Gareth Barry holds the record for most Premier League appearances with 653.
Best Players
The Premier League has attracted virtually every top player in world football. Eric Cantona was the league's first iconic figure. Thierry Henry (Arsenal), who is the league's second-highest foreign scorer, defined an era with his elegance. Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney were the league's defining stars of the 2000s and 2010s. Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Paul Scholes are considered among the greatest midfielders in the competition's history. In the modern era, Kevin De Bruyne has consistently been rated as one of the world's best players during his time at Manchester City. Mohamed Salah has shattered Premier League scoring records at Liverpool. Erling Haaland's debut season in 2022-23 was arguably the greatest individual goalscoring season the league has seen.
