About Pro League
Overview
The Belgian Pro League (officially the Jupiler Pro League for sponsorship reasons) is the top professional football division in Belgium, organized by the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) and the Pro League organization. Founded in 1895, it is one of the oldest football leagues in continental Europe. The league features 16 clubs competing in a unique playoff format, where teams compete in a regular season followed by championship and relegation playoffs, making it one of the most distinctive league systems in world football.
History & Major Events
The Pro League has been dominated historically by the "Big Three" of Belgian football: Club Brugge, Anderlecht, and Standard Liège. Anderlecht is the most successful club in Belgian football history and was a major force in European competitions during the 1970s and 1980s, winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup twice (1976, 1978) and reaching the UEFA Cup final in 1984. Club Brugge had memorable Champions League runs, including reaching the European Cup final in 1978. The Belgian national team, nicknamed "The Red Devils," experienced a golden generation from 2014 onward with World Cup third-place finishes and Euro semi-final appearances, boosting the league's global profile. Gent's unexpected Pro League title in 2014-15, their first ever, was one of the biggest surprises in recent Belgian football history.
Records
Anderlecht holds the record for the most Belgian top-flight titles with 34 championships. Club Brugge and Union Saint-Gilloise also have notable historical title tallies. Jan Ceulemans, who played for Club Brugge in the 1980s, is one of the most celebrated players in Belgian football history. The record attendance for a Belgian league match was set at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. Club Brugge's recent dominance in the 2010s and 2020s has established them as the current benchmark club in Belgium.
Best Players
The Belgian Pro League has been the proving ground for some exceptional talent. Jan Ceulemans was Belgium's greatest player of the 1980s and a Club Brugge legend. Enzo Scifo, a creative midfielder of the late 1980s and 1990s, was one of Europe's most gifted players. In the modern era, Belgium's golden generation produced world-class players who developed in the Pro League, including Vincent Kompany (Anderlecht), Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard (who started at Tubize and then Chelsea), Kevin De Bruyne (who played for Genk), and Thibaut Courtois (Genk). Club Brugge's Hans Vanaken has been one of the dominant players of the modern era, winning the Pro League Player of the Year award multiple times.
