About Serie A
Overview
Serie A is the top professional football league in Italy, organized by the Lega Serie A. Founded in 1929 in its current single round-robin format (having existed as a championship since 1898), the league features 20 clubs competing across a season that runs from August to May. Widely regarded as one of the world's best football leagues, Serie A is renowned for its tactical sophistication, defensive excellence, and historically has been home to many of the world's greatest players and managers.
History & Major Events
Serie A was historically dominated by Juventus, Internazionale, and AC Milan. Juventus's unprecedented nine consecutive Scudetti from 2012 to 2020 redefined the concept of domestic dominance in modern European football. AC Milan and Internazionale, who share the famous San Siro stadium in Milan, have been among Europe's most successful clubs internationally. The "Calciopoli" match-fixing scandal of 2006 rocked Italian football, resulting in Juventus being stripped of two titles and relegated to Serie B, while Fiorentina, Lazio, and AC Milan also received points deductions. Italy's national team has been the most successful in Serie A's history, winning four FIFA World Cups (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006). Inter Milan's 2009-10 treble under Jose Mourinho — winning Serie A, Coppa Italia, and UEFA Champions League — was a historic achievement.
Records
Juventus holds the record for the most Serie A titles with 36 championships. Silvio Piola is the all-time top scorer in Serie A history with 274 goals. Gianluigi Buffon holds the record for most clean sheets in the competition. The largest ever winning margin in a season was achieved by Juventus, who clinched the title with multiple games to spare during their nine-peat. AC Milan and Internazionale each hold seven UEFA Champions League titles combined.
Best Players
Serie A has produced and attracted a staggering array of footballing legends. Giuseppe Meazza, after whom the San Siro stadium is officially named, was the defining Italian player of the 1930s. Roberto Baggio, the 1993 Ballon d'Or winner, was one of the most gifted players ever to grace the league. Paolo Maldini spent his entire 25-year career at AC Milan. Alessandro Del Piero was Juventus's iconic captain for over a decade. The league also attracted Ronaldo Nazario, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho, and in the modern era, Cristiano Ronaldo who played for Juventus from 2018 to 2021. Current stars like Victor Osimhen (Napoli) and Lautaro Martinez (Inter) continue the tradition of world-class talent in the Italian top flight.
