West Ham United

The London Stadium is the home of West Ham United Football Club, located on Marshgate Lane in Stratford, east London, within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The stadium holds 59,623 spectators and was originally constructed as the centrepiece athletics venue for the London 2012 Olympic Games, designed by Populous architects. West Ham moved in for the 2016-17 Premier League season, leaving their historic Boleyn Ground in Upton Park where they had played since 1904. The transition generated considerable debate among supporters but gave the club one of the largest stadiums in the Premier League.

The Boleyn Ground, which West Ham vacated, was a genuinely beloved community stadium in the heart of the East End of London, with a fierce local identity. The London Stadium, by contrast, is a converted multi-purpose arena and its transformation for football use has been both celebrated and criticised. The running track around the pitch was initially retained, placing supporters further from the action than at traditional football grounds. Ongoing modifications, including the installation of closer-in seating and the redesign of the stadium's lower tier, have progressively improved the atmosphere and proximity of supporters to the pitch.

West Ham's identity as the "Academy of Football" - a club renowned for developing homegrown talent including Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, and more recently Declan Rice and Joe Cole - continues to define the culture at the London Stadium. The club won the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023, bringing European trophy success to the east London club for the first time since the Cup Winners' Cup in 1965. With the Olympic Park continuing to develop around it, the London Stadium occupies a unique position in modern Premier League football, balancing commercial ambition with the traditions of one of England's most historic clubs.
