Stockhorn Arena
FC Thun plays at the Stockhorn Arena, a modern football stadium located in Thun, a town in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, situated at the northern end of the stunning Lake Thun, with the Bernese Alps rising behind the city. Opened in 2011 with a capacity of 10,400 spectators, the Stockhorn Arena replaced the old Lachen ground that had served Thun for many decades. Named after the Stockhorn mountain that is visible from the stadium, the arena is considered one of the most scenically situated football grounds in Europe, with views of the Alpine landscape providing an extraordinary backdrop to Swiss Super League football. The stadium's name is part of a commercial naming arrangement.
FC Thun's most celebrated moment came in the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League, when the club — having won promotion to the Champions League group stage by defeating Aberdeen in qualifying — were drawn in a group with Arsenal, Ajax, and Sparta Prague. The Swiss club performed respectably in the group, with their home matches at the old Lachen ground generating extraordinary local excitement for what were the most significant matches in the club's history. More recently, Thun have maintained a consistent presence in the Swiss Super League from their modern Stockhorn Arena, providing competitive football in one of Switzerland's most beautiful natural settings.
The Stockhorn Arena's mountain backdrop is genuinely spectacular on clear Alpine days, with the Stockhorn peak and the broader Bernese Alps visible from the stands, creating a matchday experience that combines sport with one of Europe's most dramatic natural landscapes. Thun's location between Bern and the Bernese Oberland ski resorts gives the town a prosperous, outdoor-oriented character, and the football club adds a professional sporting dimension to a community known primarily for tourism, military education (the Swiss Army has a significant training presence in Thun), and outdoor recreation.
