Team History

Elche CF – Club History

Elche Club de Fútbol was founded in 1923 in Elche (Elx in Valencian), a city in the Alicante province of southeastern Spain. The club is affectionately known as the Ilicitanos or the Franjiverdes (Green-and-Whites, for their striped shirts), and represent a city famous for its extraordinary palm grove – the Palmeral of Elche, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Elche CF have had multiple spells in La Liga and earned the distinction of being in the top flight of Spanish football during their most celebrated period in the early 1960s to 1980s and again in various modern promotions.

Elche's most celebrated historical achievement was finishing fourth in La Liga in 1963–64, which remains the club's best-ever league finish. For a club from a relatively modest provincial city, competing consistently in La Liga's top half was an achievement of note. The club has experienced the typical pattern of Spanish provincial football – multiple promotions to La Liga followed by relegation, with each return to the top flight celebrated across the palm-lined city.

La Liga History

Elche have competed in La Liga across different periods of their history, most recently earning promotion to the top flight in 2020. Under manager Jorge Almirón, the club maintained their La Liga status for two seasons before relegation in 2022. Their La Liga campaigns have been characterised by hard-fought survival battles rather than title challenges, but the pride of competing in Spain's top division against clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona is valued enormously by Elche's supporters. The club's Estadio Martínez Valero generates passionate support from the Alicante province community.

Estadio Martínez Valero

Elche play at the Estadio Martínez Valero, a stadium with a capacity of approximately 36,000 that has been the club's home since 1976. Located on the outskirts of Elche, the stadium was built for the 1982 FIFA World Cup (Elche hosted group stage matches) and provides excellent facilities for Spanish top-flight football. The ground has been the setting for Elche's La Liga campaigns and European competition, and its palm tree-adorned surroundings reflect the distinctive character of the city it serves.
