KV Kortrijk – Club History

KV Kortrijk (Koninklijke Voetbalvereniging Kortrijk) is a professional football club based in Kortrijk (Courtrai), a city in the West Flanders province of Belgium, near the French border. Founded in 1901, the club has a long history in Belgian football and has spent many seasons in the top flight over the decades, though they have also experienced periods in the lower divisions. Kortrijk are known as the Kerels (Fellows), a reference to the Battle of the Golden Spurs which took place in Kortrijk in 1302 – a proud historical event for the city.

The club's modern era has been characterised by consistent but modest top-flight performances, with occasional exciting European qualification and cup runs. Kortrijk have established themselves as a respectable lower-mid-table Pro League club, known for developing talent and competing with limited resources against more wealthy rivals.

Pro League Era & Titles

KV Kortrijk have competed in the Pro League (and its predecessor, the Belgian First Division) for many seasons in recent decades. They have never won the Belgian First Division, but their consistent presence in the top flight and occasional cup runs are achievements for a club of their size. The club won the Belgian Cup in 1973 – their only major trophy – and have reached the cup final on other occasions. They have also qualified for European competition through cup performances. Their consistent survival in the Pro League against bigger-budget rivals is a testament to their organisation and community focus.

Stadium

Kortrijk play at the Guldensporenstadion (Golden Spurs Stadium), a modern purpose-built stadium in Kortrijk that opened in 2013. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 9,399 and provides good facilities for Pro League football. It replaced the old Burgemeester Vanderghotestraat ground where Kortrijk had played for many decades. The Guldensporenstadion is named after the famous medieval battle and represents a significant investment in the club's infrastructure. Average attendances are typically 6,000–8,500 per match.

Most Famous Players

KV Kortrijk's history includes many dedicated professionals who have served the club well. Bjorn Engels developed as a defender at Kortrijk before moving to bigger clubs, eventually playing for Aston Villa and the Belgian national team. Aleksandar Bjelanovic was a prolific striker at the club. Sébastien Dewaest has been a long-serving and dependable defender. In recent years, Faïz Selemani has been an exciting winger, while Hannes Van der Bruggen was a midfield talent who came through the club's ranks. The club has consistently served as a development platform for players who go on to bigger Belgian and European careers.

Key Milestones

Kortrijk's 1973 Belgian Cup win remains the club's greatest achievement. The move to the modern Guldensporenstadion in 2013 was a significant infrastructure milestone. The club's consistent Pro League presence and their ability to compete against much wealthier rivals reflects well on their management and community ties. The name of their stadium – referencing the Battle of the Golden Spurs – connects the club deeply to Kortrijk's proud historical identity.
