Olympiakos FC – Club History
Olympiakos Football Club was founded on 10 March 1925 in the port city of Piraeus, near Athens, and has grown to become the most successful and most-supported football club in Greek history. The club's name honours the ideals of the Olympic Games, and their red and white colours have become synonymous with Greek football dominance for nearly a century. Olympiakos FC is part of the larger Olympiakos Club, which encompasses multiple sporting disciplines, but the football club is by far the most celebrated and widely followed section of this sporting institution.
Olympiakos's domestic dominance is virtually unparalleled in European football. The club has won the Greek Super League on well over 40 occasions, making them the most decorated club in Greek football history by an enormous margin. Their sustained championship-winning record, particularly from the early 1990s onwards, saw the club win 25 of the 26 consecutive Greek championships between 1997 and 2022 – a record of domestic dominance that stands comparison with any club in European football history. This extraordinary consistency has been built on strong ownership, recruitment of quality foreign players, and a massive fan base.
Greek Super League Dominance
Olympiakos's record in Greek football is simply staggering. Over 40 Super League titles, including virtually unbroken dominance from the mid-1990s, cement them as Greek football's ultimate institution. Their ability to attract quality South American and European players, combined with strong Greek international talent, has given them perpetual domestic superiority. The club has also won the Greek Cup on numerous occasions, completing multiple domestic doubles. This dominance has occasionally frustrated Greek football's development of competition, but it reflects the extraordinary organisational and financial strength that Olympiakos has accumulated.
Champions League Campaigns
Olympiakos have been regular participants in the UEFA Champions League, qualifying almost every season by virtue of their domestic dominance. Their most celebrated European moment came in the 2014–15 Champions League group stage, when they defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford 2–0 in a stunning result. Olympiakos were eliminated in dramatic fashion when they lost the return leg 3–2, but the away victory at Old Trafford remains one of Greek football's proudest European moments. The club has also qualified from Champions League groups on occasion, demonstrating their ability to compete with Europe's elite even if sustained deep runs have proved elusive.
Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium
Olympiakos play their home matches at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, a modern arena rebuilt in 2004 for the Athens Olympics and named after a hero of the Greek War of Independence. The stadium holds approximately 32,000 supporters and is known for its intense atmosphere, particularly during Champions League home matches. Located in the heart of Piraeus, the port city adjacent to Athens, the ground has a maritime industrial character that reflects the club's Piraeus roots. The red-clad stands on European nights create one of Greek football's most spectacular visual spectacles.
Legendary Players
Olympiakos's decades of success have attracted and produced numerous outstanding players. Giovanni, the Brazilian midfielder, was a beloved figure of the modern era who gave outstanding service. Rivaldo – who won the Ballon d'Or – had a notable spell with Olympiakos in his later career, bringing world-class quality. Predrag Đorđević and Stelios Giannakopoulos were key figures in early European campaigns. In more recent times, keeper Stefanos Kapino, midfielder Andreas Bouchalakis, and Kostas Fortounis have been Greek international stalwarts. Colombian striker Camilo Zúñiga contributed important Champions League goals. Konstantinos Mitroglou was a prolific striker who became one of the club's most important modern players.
