Málaga CF – Club History
Málaga CF was founded in 1994 through the merger of Málaga CF and Atlético Malagueño, though the city's football tradition dates back to 1904 when the original Málaga Football Club was established. Based in Málaga, the vibrant coastal city on Spain's Costa del Sol in Andalusia, the club plays in blue and white and has built a history that includes one of the most romantic runs in UEFA Champions League history. Despite their modest origins, Málaga achieved European football's highest stage and came agonisingly close to a Champions League semi-final in one of the competition's most memorable nights.
Málaga's transformation from a modest Andalusian club to a Champions League contender came rapidly following the 2010 acquisition of the club by Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani of Qatar. With significant investment, manager Manuel Pellegrini built an exciting squad containing world-class players including Ruud van Nistelrooy, Santi Cazorla, Isco, and Nacho Monreal. The club earned successive top-four La Liga finishes and qualified for the 2012–13 Champions League, where they produced an extraordinary campaign that transfixed European football.
Champions League Quarter-Final 2013
Málaga's 2012–13 Champions League campaign remains the greatest achievement in Spanish provincial football's modern history. After defeating Porto, Zenit St. Petersburg, and Borussia Dortmund in earlier rounds, Málaga faced Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals. In a dramatic second leg, Málaga led 2-1 deep into injury time before conceding two goals in the final two minutes to lose 3-2 on aggregate – a heartbreaking elimination that became one of European football's most discussed what-ifs. The emotion of that night at La Rosaleda captured football supporters worldwide.
La Rosaleda Stadium
Málaga play at La Rosaleda Stadium in the city centre, a ground that has been progressively modernised and holds approximately 30,000 supporters. The stadium is located near the city's historic centre and overlooking the Mediterranean, making it one of Spanish football's more pleasant venues. La Rosaleda generated extraordinary atmosphere during the Champions League era, with sold-out crowds creating noise levels that contributed to the club's European success. The stadium has been the home of Málaga football since 1941.
Legendary Players
The Champions League era produced the club's finest players. Isco was a supremely gifted creative midfielder who came through Málaga's academy and was the creative heartbeat of Pellegrini's team before his move to Real Madrid and international stardom. Santi Cazorla was a technically brilliant midfielder who flourished at Málaga before moving to Arsenal. Ruud van Nistelrooy brought experienced European quality to the forward line. Willy Caballero was an outstanding goalkeeper during this period. Joaquín Sánchez – later famous at Betis – was a creative winger who contributed significantly.
