Lechia Gdańsk – Club History
Lechia Gdańsk was founded in 1945 in Gdańsk (formerly Danzig), one of Poland's most historic and culturally significant cities on the Baltic Sea coast. The club's founding immediately after World War II reflects the rebuilding of Gdańsk's Polish identity following the city's traumatic wartime history and the replacement of its German population. Playing in white and green, Lechia represent the proud Pomeranian capital and have built a history that includes Polish championship silverware and European competition. The club's connection to Gdańsk's Solidarity movement and the city's significance in Poland's modern political history gives Lechia a unique cultural importance.
Lechia Gdańsk won the Polish Cup in 1983 while Gdańsk was the epicentre of the Solidarity trade union movement, and this championship connection to the political and social history of Poland has given the club a significance beyond purely sporting achievement. Their subsequent Ekstraklasa campaigns and European qualification through cup competition have maintained Lechia as one of Polish football's more recognised provincial clubs.
