Asito Stadion
The Asito Stadion, also known historically as the Polman Stadion, is the home of Heracles Almelo, located at Stadionlaan 1 in the city of Almelo, in the Overijssel province of the eastern Netherlands. The stadium holds 12,500 spectators and has been substantially redeveloped in the modern era to provide a covered, purpose-built football venue suited to Eredivisie competition. Named after Asito, a cleaning and facility services company based in the region, the ground serves the textile industry city of Almelo and its surrounding communities in the Twente region.
Heracles Almelo have been a consistent Eredivisie presence in the modern Dutch football landscape, representing a city that is also home to the nearby FC Twente - their primary regional rivals in the Enschede derby. The club has produced talented Dutch players and has competed intelligently with limited resources against more well-funded opponents. Heracles' sustained Eredivisie membership through the 2010s under coach John van den Brom and others demonstrated the club's ability to build cohesive squads that compete effectively. The club has also hosted Europa League qualifying matches, bringing continental competition to the Almelo community.
The Asito Stadion generates passionate support from the Almelo community and the broader Twente region, particularly for local derbies against FC Twente. The ground's modern covered stands and good facilities make it a comfortable and respectable Eredivisie venue. Almelo itself has the character of a post-industrial eastern Dutch city, with a textile industry heritage that defined the area in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Football has served as an important focal point for community identity in a region that has experienced significant economic change, and Heracles Almelo's consistent professional football represents a source of pride for the city and its surrounding villages.
