Team History

Bodø/Glimt – Club History

Bodø/Glimt, officially Idrettslaget Glimt, was founded on 2 February 1916 in Bodø, a small city above the Arctic Circle in the Nordland county of northern Norway. Playing their football at a latitude where the sun does not set in midsummer and barely rises in winter, Bodø/Glimt have built one of the most remarkable stories in the history of European club football — transforming from a small provincial club in Norway's remote north into a genuine force in European competition within just a few remarkable seasons. The club's yellow and black colours, evocative of the Arctic light that illuminates their Aspmyra Stadion, have become a symbol of what can be achieved by a well-run club with clarity of purpose and a progressive football philosophy.

Bodø/Glimt's rise has been built on a coherent playing identity, exceptional coaching, and an ability to identify and develop talent in a region not traditionally associated with elite football. Their UEFA Conference League quarter-final appearances, Champions League group stage campaigns, and devastating victory over José Mourinho's Roma (6-1 in the Conference League) have made Bodø/Glimt one of the most captivating clubs in European football and a genuine underdog success story that the global game has embraced with warmth and admiration.

Eliteserien Era & Titles

Bodø/Glimt won their first Eliteserien (Norwegian top division) title in 2009, ending a long wait for the club's first major honour. But their most extraordinary period of domestic dominance came from 2020 onwards, when they won five consecutive Eliteserien titles from 2020 to 2024 under coach Kjetil Knutsen — an unprecedented run of Norwegian championship dominance that propelled the club into sustained European competition. Their 2020 title-winning campaign included a remarkable unbeaten season in the Norwegian league, finishing with an extraordinary goal difference that set records across Scandinavian football.

Bodø/Glimt have also won the Norwegian Cup (NM Cup) on multiple occasions, further cementing their position as the dominant force in Norwegian football during the early 2020s. Their European campaigns have been the defining achievement of this era: eliminating Celtic from the Champions League qualifying rounds, defeating AS Roma twice in the Conference League group stage (including the famous 6-1), and competing in the knockout rounds of European competition. Their brand of pressing, attacking football under Knutsen became one of the most studied tactical approaches in European football during this period.

Stadium

Bodø/Glimt play their home matches at the Aspmyra Stadion in Bodø, one of the northernmost professional football grounds in Europe. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 8,000 spectators and is situated above the Arctic Circle, which means that summer European matches are played in perpetual Arctic daylight — creating a unique and magical atmosphere that visiting clubs find deeply unusual. The stadium's modest capacity and geographic remoteness have not prevented Bodø/Glimt from attracting large crowds and creating one of the most distinctive home environments in European football. Plans for an expanded stadium have been discussed as the club's European profile has grown dramatically.

Most Famous Players

Bodø/Glimt's most celebrated players in the modern era have been those who drove their remarkable Champions League and Conference League campaigns. Jens Petter Hauge — a skilful winger who attracted attention with his performances in European competition before moving to AC Milan — is among the most prominent players to emerge from the club. Patrick Berg, the combative Norwegian international midfielder, was a central figure in the five-title run. Ola Solbakken attracted interest from AS Roma after his performances in the Conference League. Hugo Vetlesen, Ulrik Saltnes, and goalkeeper Nikita Haikin have all been key figures in the squad that made Bodø/Glimt a European household name. The club continues to develop and export talent at a rate that belies their modest geographic and financial circumstances.
