Hannover 96 – Club History
Hannover 96 was founded on 12 April 1896 in Hannover, the capital of the Lower Saxony state in northern Germany. One of Germany's oldest clubs, Hannover have won the German championship twice in their history – 1938 and 1954 – and built a devoted following in one of Germany's major cities. Playing in red and black, the Roten (Reds) are the most significant football club in the Hannover region and compete in a city known primarily for its trade fairs and as the home of the HDI Arena, one of German football's better-attended grounds.
Hannover 96's post-war history includes periods in all three professional tiers of German football, with the club oscillating between the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga across multiple decades. Their most successful modern period came under coach Mirko Slomka and later director of football Dirk Dufner, when the club qualified for the UEFA Europa League and the Champions League qualifying rounds, reflecting a period of genuine quality and ambition in the early 2010s. Martin Kind's long-running chairmanship has been both praised and controversial in German football circles.
Bundesliga History
Hannover 96 were a founding member of the Bundesliga in 1963 and have spent periods competing at German football's highest level. Their most consistent recent Bundesliga run came from 2010 to 2017, a seven-year period in which the club qualified for European competition, faced top European clubs, and established themselves as a credible top-half Bundesliga side. Their Europa League campaigns during this era brought continental opponents to Hannover and demonstrated the quality achievable by a well-run German provincial club.
HDI Arena
Hannover 96 play at the HDI Arena in Hannover, a modern stadium that was significantly upgraded for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and holds approximately 49,000 supporters. The ground has hosted World Cup matches, European matches, and Bundesliga occasions across its history. One of German football's larger modern stadiums, the HDI Arena generates a fine atmosphere when full and reflects the serious fanbase Hannover 96 has developed across Lower Saxony. The stadium sits alongside the exhibition grounds for which Hannover is internationally famous.

Hannover 96 has been home to various respected German players.
