CD Santa Clara – Club History
CD Santa Clara was founded in 1921 in Ponta Delgada, the capital of São Miguel Island in the Azores archipelago, making it the most geographically remote club to have competed regularly in Portugal's top-flight Primeira Liga. The club plays in red and white and represents the distinct identity of the Azorean people – Portuguese citizens living in a volcanic island group in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1,500 kilometres from mainland Portugal. Santa Clara's Primeira Liga presence has been a source of enormous pride for the Azorean community and Portuguese football as a whole.
Santa Clara earned promotion to the Primeira Liga in 2017 and have maintained their top-flight status for multiple seasons, qualifying for European competition through the Liga Portugal promotion/relegation playoffs and through their performances. The club's ability to compete in the Primeira Liga while based in the Azores – flying to every mainland match – represents one of European football's more extraordinary logistical stories. Their Europa League qualifying rounds participation was celebrated across the Azores.
