Volksparkstadion
The Volksparkstadion is the historic home of Hamburger SV, located at Sylvesterallee 7 in the Bahrenfeld district of Hamburg. The stadium holds 57,000 spectators and has a history stretching back to 1925 when the original Volkspark complex was laid out. The current structure was largely rebuilt between 1998 and 2000, transforming an older bowl-shaped terraced ground into a modern all-seater arena. Known commercially as the AOL Arena, HSH Nordbank Arena, Imtech Arena, and Volksparkstadion at various points, the ground returned to its traditional name in 2015. It was one of the twelve venues for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, hosting six matches including a quarter-final.
Hamburger SV hold the unique distinction of being the only club to have played in every season of the Bundesliga since the league's formation in 1963 - a record of continuous top-flight membership that stood unbroken for 55 years until their relegation in 2018. For decades, the Volksparkstadion served as the home of a club that was among Europe's finest, winning the Bundesliga three times and lifting the European Cup in 1983 when two goals from Felix Magath secured a 1-0 victory over Juventus in Athens. The stadium has also hosted European Cup Winners' Cup finals and has a deep connection with the history of German and European football through this era.
HSV's relegation in 2018 brought the Bundesliga's longest streak to an end and began a difficult period in which the club fought to return to the top flight from the 2. Bundesliga. The Volksparkstadion, meanwhile, continued to attract strong attendances as Hamburg's supporters maintained their backing through the difficult years. The prospect of the club's return to the Bundesliga remains a major story in German football, and when that happens the Volksparkstadion - one of Germany's largest club grounds - will once again host top-flight football. The ground hosted Euro 2024 matches, reaffirming its continued status as a major German sporting venue.
