Luminus Arena
The Luminus Arena is the modern home of KRC Genk, located at Stadionplein 4 in the Waterschei district of Genk in the Belgian province of Limburg. The stadium holds 24,956 supporters and opened in 1999, providing Genk with a flagship venue that matched the club's growing ambitions at the time of its construction. Named after energy company Luminus under a commercial agreement, the arena is one of the most modern and well-equipped stadiums in Belgian football and has established itself as a regular European football venue.
KRC Genk was founded in 1988 through the merger of Waterschei SV and Racing Club Genk, two clubs from the Limburg mining community. Despite their relatively short history, Genk have accumulated an impressive record that includes multiple Pro League titles and consistent European participation. The Luminus Arena hosted UEFA Champions League group stage football in both 2011-12 and 2019-20, giving the city of Genk a taste of the continent's premier club competition. The club has also produced a remarkable number of top international talents from their academy, including Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne, and Divock Origi - all of whom progressed to Europe's biggest clubs.
The Luminus Arena's design is clean, modern, and purpose-built for football, offering strong acoustics and good views from all four stands. Genk attract consistent and passionate support from across the Limburg province, and the stadium regularly approaches capacity for important domestic and European matches. The club's reputation as one of Belgium's foremost talent producers means scouts from across Europe regularly visit the arena. Expansion plans and stadium improvements continue to be discussed as Genk seek to consolidate their position among Belgium's top clubs on a permanent basis.
