GKS Katowice – Club History
GKS Katowice (Górniczo-Hutniczy Klub Sportowy Katowice) was founded in 1964 in Katowice, the capital of the Silesia region in southern Poland – one of Central Europe's most historically significant industrial areas. The club was established by workers of the mining and steel industries, as the name (Miners' and Steelworkers' Sports Club) reflects. Playing in gold and black, GKS competed in the Polish Ekstraklasa during their prime years in the 1980s and 1990s and won the Polish Cup in 1986. The club represents the proud industrial heritage of the Upper Silesia region.
