Red Bull Arena
The Red Bull Arena is the modern home of RB Leipzig, located at Am Sportforum 3 in the Zentrum-Sud district of Leipzig, Saxony. The stadium holds 47,069 spectators and occupies the site of the former Zentralstadion, one of the largest football grounds ever built, which was itself constructed on the foundations of a previous pre-war stadium that hosted over 100,000 spectators. The current Red Bull Arena was developed in 2004 as a new inner bowl within the shell of the old Zentralstadion's earthwork mounds, creating a unique architectural relationship between a modern UEFA-compliant venue and its historic predecessor. The ground served as a FIFA World Cup venue in 2006.
RB Leipzig are one of the most remarkable stories in European football, having been founded in 2009 by Red Bull GmbH and rising from the fifth tier of German football to the Bundesliga in just seven seasons. The Red Bull Arena became the stage for this extraordinary ascent and has since hosted Champions League football, including a semi-final appearance in the 2019-20 edition in Lisbon. Under managers including Ralph Hasenhuttl, Julian Nagelsmann, and Jesse Marsch, Leipzig developed a distinctive high-pressing, high-intensity playing style that made them one of Europe's most watchable teams. The stadium has witnessed the club's rapid accumulation of league runners-up finishes and DFB-Pokal Cup victories.
The stadium's capacity was increased to 47,069 following expansion work, and the ground consistently sells out for European and top Bundesliga fixtures. The outer earthwork berms of the old Zentralstadion are preserved and used for parking and event spaces, giving the Red Bull Arena a distinctive parkland setting unlike any other ground in Germany. Leipzig's position in the former East Germany, a region underserved by top-flight football for many years, has given the club a distinctive fan community, though the club's ownership model has also attracted significant controversy from traditionalist football supporters across the country.
