Team History

Toulouse FC – Club History

Toulouse Football Club, founded in 1937 in Toulouse, the capital of the Occitanie region in southwest France and one of France's largest cities, is one of French football's best-supported provincial clubs. Known as "Les Violets" (The Purples) for their distinctive violet shirts, Toulouse have a devoted fanbase from a city that also boasts France's leading aerospace and technology industries, as well as the prestigious Université Toulouse. The club has a rich footballing history and represents the pride of the Occitanie region.

Toulouse's greatest period came in the late 1950s and 1960s, when the club was a regular Ligue 1 force and won the Coupe de France in 1957. A second notable era came under John Delaney and Dutch coaches in the 2000s, when Toulouse consistently qualified for European competition. The club suffered relegation and spent several seasons in Ligue 2 before new American ownership — RedBird Capital Partners, who also own AC Milan — acquired the club in 2020 and rebuilt it aggressively. Toulouse won promotion to Ligue 1 in 2022 and immediately secured European football, finishing sixth in their debut season back in the top flight. In 2023, they won the Coupe de France, their first major trophy in 66 years, and qualified for the Europa League.

Ligue 1 Era & Titles

Toulouse have won the Coupe de France twice — in 1957 and 2023. They have never won a Ligue 1 title. Their best modern league finish was fifth place in the 2006–07 season, which qualified them for the UEFA Cup. The 2023 Coupe de France triumph, defeating Nantes in the final, was the greatest achievement in the club's history and came just one year after their return to Ligue 1 under RedBird ownership.

Full honours: Coupe de France – 2 (1957, 2023). Toulouse are a model example of how American investment combined with smart sporting management can rapidly elevate a French provincial club. Their Europa League participation in 2023–24 represented a significant milestone in the modern era.

Stadium

Toulouse play at the Stadium de Toulouse (also known as the Stadium Municipal), located in the Chapitre neighbourhood of Toulouse. Built in 1937, the same year as the club's founding, the stadium has a capacity of approximately 33,150. It hosted matches at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2016. The stadium is a historic venue with great atmosphere but has ageing facilities compared to France's newer arenas. RedBird's investment has included discussions about stadium improvements to better serve the club's European ambitions. Average attendances have grown significantly since promotion, regularly exceeding 25,000.

Most Famous Players

Toulouse has developed and showcased a number of notable talents over the decades. Salif Keïta — one of Africa's first football superstars — played for Toulouse in the late 1960s. Goalkeeper Cédric Carrasso and defenders Étienne Capoue and Moussa Sissoko came through the club in the 2000s, the latter two going on to international careers with France. Bafétimbi Gomis was a prolific striker at Toulouse before his career took him across Europe. More recently, Thijs Dallinga and Zakaria Aboukhlal have been key figures under RedBird ownership. Maxence Caqueret and Warren Zaïre-Emery have been linked with the club's growing talent pipeline.
