Sunderland

The Stadium of Light is the home of Sunderland AFC, located on Millennium Way beside the River Wear in the city of Sunderland, in the north-east of England. The stadium holds 48,707 spectators and opened in July 1997, replacing the historic Roker Park, which had been the club's home since 1898. The name pays tribute to the coal mining heritage of the region, as the site was formerly the Wearmouth Colliery, one of the largest coal mines in the British Isles. The stadium's name refers to the miners' safety lamps that were a symbol of the area's industrial past.

The Stadium of Light was constructed in two phases, initially opening with a capacity of around 42,000 before being expanded to its current size in 2000. At the time of its completion, it was one of the largest grounds in England and demonstrated Sunderland's ambition for life at the highest level. The stadium was used as a venue during Euro 1996, hosting three group stage matches, and has also staged international friendlies and FA Cup semi-finals. It has witnessed some of the most electric atmospheres in English football, particularly during the club's periods of sustained top-flight membership.

Sunderland's journey has been marked by dramatic highs and lows, including back-to-back relegations that saw them drop to League One between 2018 and 2022, before a memorable return to the Premier League. The Stadium of Light has remained a constant throughout this turbulent era, a source of local pride in a fiercely loyal football city.
