Real Sporting de Gijón – Club History
Real Sporting de Gijón was founded in 1905 in Gijón, the largest city in the Asturias region of northern Spain. The club plays in red and white stripes and has a rich history in Spanish football, including multiple First Division campaigns and a Copa del Rey victory. The Molinón stadium – one of Spain's oldest football grounds – provides an iconic home on the Cantabrian coast, and Sporting's passionate Asturian support has always been among La Liga's most devoted. The club produced iconic Spanish player Quini, one of the greatest strikers in Spanish football history.
Sporting Gijón's greatest era was the late 1970s and 1980s, when under manager Enrique Fernández "Quique" they were a genuine La Liga force and participated in UEFA Cup competition. Their Copa del Rey victories and sustained First Division campaigns built a legacy of northern Spanish football pride. The club has spent more recent years in the Segunda División, working to return to the top flight and restore the glories of their peak era.
