CD Tondela – Club History
CD Tondela was founded in 1933 in Tondela, a small municipality in the Viseu district of central Portugal. With a population of around 28,000, Tondela is one of the smallest communities to have competed in the Portuguese Primeira Liga in the modern era, making their sustained top-flight presence from 2015 to 2022 a remarkable achievement. Playing in yellow and red, Tondela represented the Beira region with considerable pride and repeatedly avoided relegation against clubs with far superior resources. Their Estádio João Cardoso was one of Portugal's more intimate and atmospheric Primeira Liga venues.
Tondela's seven consecutive Primeira Liga seasons from 2015 to 2022 were remarkable for a club of their size. Under coaches including Petit and others, the club consistently organised themselves to survive in Portugal's competitive top flight. Their eventual relegation in 2022 ended a proud chapter in the club's history, but the sustained top-flight experience transformed Tondela's infrastructure and profile within Portuguese football.
