Europa-Park Stadion

Freiburg im Breisgau, Schwarzwaldstraße 193 34,700 capacity

The Europa-Park Stadion is the modern home of SC Freiburg, located at Schwarzwaldstrasse 193 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Wurttemberg. The stadium holds 34,700 spectators and opened in October 2021, replacing the old Schwarzwald-Stadion which had been Freiburg's home since 1954. The new ground was built on a site to the south of the city and was named in partnership with the Europa-Park theme park, Germany's largest, located nearby in Rust. The construction represented a landmark moment for a club that had spent decades as a Bundesliga yo-yo club, and its completion coincided with a period of sustained top-flight stability.

SC Freiburg's story is one of the most admired in German football - a university city club with modest resources that has consistently punched above its weight through excellent youth development, shrewd recruitment, and clear tactical philosophy under long-serving coach Christian Streich, who managed the club from 2012 until 2024. The Europa-Park Stadion has hosted Europa League group stage matches as Freiburg achieved their best-ever Bundesliga finish of third place in 2021-22. The old Schwarzwald-Stadion, while fondly remembered for its intimate atmosphere and hillside setting, had become inadequate for a modern top-flight club, and the new stadium gives Freiburg a facility befitting their current standing.

The Europa-Park Stadion's design prioritises atmosphere and sustainability, with the compact, enclosed structure generating strong acoustics and an impressive matchday environment. The stadium includes solar panels on the roof as part of Freiburg's commitment to environmental responsibility - consistent with the city's progressive culture. Capacity for European matches is slightly reduced due to UEFA safety requirements. The stadium regularly sells out for top Bundesliga fixtures and European nights, underlining the genuine depth of support in a city where SC Freiburg is the dominant cultural institution despite the club's modest financial footprint by German top-flight standards.
