KVC Westerlo – Club History
KVC Westerlo is a professional football club based in Westerlo, a municipality in the Antwerp province of Belgium. Founded in 1933, the club has a modest but genuine history in Belgian football. Westerlo have experienced various spells in the top flight alongside long periods in the lower divisions, and are one of the smaller clubs to have competed at Pro League level.
The club's most recent and significant chapter began when Abu Dhabi-based businessman Khalifa Al Hammadi became the majority shareholder in 2019. Under this new ownership and with fresh investment, Westerlo improved their infrastructure and ambitions significantly. The club won the First Division B championship in 2021–22, earning promotion to the Pro League for the 2022–23 season – their first return to the top flight in over a decade. They have since established themselves as a solid Pro League side.
Pro League Era & Titles
Westerlo's Pro League history has been intermittent, with their most notable top-flight spell in the late 1990s and 2000s. After many years in the lower divisions, their return to the Pro League in 2022 as First Division B champions represented a significant achievement. Under head coach Jonas De Roeck, Westerlo adapted well to the top flight, surviving and showing that newly promoted clubs can establish themselves with smart management and squad building. Their Belgian Cup run to the final in 2001 remains one of the club's most memorable moments.
Stadium
Westerlo play at the Het Kuipje Stadium, a compact and traditional ground in Westerlo town centre with a capacity of approximately 8,000. The stadium provides an intimate atmosphere and is known for being one of the most community-embedded grounds in Belgian football. The club has invested in improving facilities at the stadium as part of their development plans. Average attendances are typically 5,000–7,500 per match, with the tight-knit local community creating a warm and partisan atmosphere.
Most Famous Players
Given Westerlo's modest stature, their most notable players have typically been those who used the club as a platform for bigger moves. In their 1990s and 2000s top-flight spell, several solid Belgian professionals represented the club. In the modern era under new ownership, the club has attracted interesting talent including experienced Belgian internationals and international players. Siemen Voet, Maxim De Cuyper (before his move to Club Brugge), and Joris Kayembe have been among the more prominent recent performers.
Key Milestones
Westerlo's return to the Pro League in 2022 as First Division B champions is the defining modern milestone. The Abu Dhabi investment bringing new ambition and resources has transformed the club's outlook. Their Belgian Cup final appearance in 2001 remains their deepest cup run. Westerlo's story of a small-town club re-establishing itself in Belgian football's top tier through smart investment and good management is an encouraging example for similarly-sized clubs.
