With a capacity of 26,512 spectators, the stadium was inaugurated in 1982 as a venue for the 1982 FIFA World Cup held in Spain — it hosted several group stage matches of that tournament, including games involving Northern Ireland and Yugoslavia. Named after José Zorrilla, a celebrated Spanish Romantic poet born in Valladolid, the stadium has been fully enclosed and modernised since its World Cup construction, with all four stands now covered and providing good facilities for Spanish professional football.

Real Valladolid has participated in La Liga on multiple occasions across their history, including notable recent spells in the top flight that included a period of ownership by Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário — "O Fenômeno" — who purchased a majority stake in the club in 2018 and brought significant international media attention to a relatively modest Spanish provincial club.
