Górnik Zabrze

Górnik Zabrze, one of Poland's most historic football clubs, plays at Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla in Zabrze, an industrial city in Upper Silesia. Named after Ernest Pohl, Górnik's legendary striker who remains the top scorer in Polish football history, the stadium has a capacity of approximately 24,600 spectators. Originally built in 1934 and subsequently renovated on multiple occasions, the ground sits in the heart of Poland's industrial heartland, a region shaped by coal mining and heavy industry, and the club's working-class identity is deeply embedded in the culture of the stadium and its supporters.

Górnik Zabrze enjoyed their greatest era in the 1960s and early 1970s, winning fourteen Polish championship titles and becoming one of Europe's most competitive clubs. Their remarkable run to the 1969–70 European Cup Winners' Cup final — where they lost to Manchester City at the Prater in Vienna — remains one of the greatest achievements in Polish football history, and the excitement of that era was reflected in enormous home attendances at the Pohl stadium. Crowds of over 60,000 were recorded during this golden period, and the records of that era stand as testament to the extraordinary support generated in Upper Silesia.

Following the transformation of the Polish economy after 1989, Górnik experienced a significant decline, falling from the apex of Polish football to the lower divisions. The club has since rebuilt its position in the Ekstraklasa, and the stadium has been updated to reflect contemporary safety and infrastructure standards. The redeveloped Stadion Ernesta Pohla, completed in its current form in 2015, has a modern all-seated design while retaining the identity of one of Polish football's most storied venues. The Górnik supporters, known as "Niebiescy" (the Blues), continue to fill the ground with the passion that has characterised Upper Silesian football for over a century.
