Wolfsberger AC – Club History
Wolfsberger AC (also known as RZ Pellets WAC) was founded in 1931 in Wolfsberg, a small town in the Lavant Valley of Carinthia, Austria's southernmost province. The club represents one of European football's most remarkable stories of a tiny provincial club achieving top-flight success and European competition – Wolfsberg has a population of under 25,000 people, making WAC one of the smallest communities hosting top-level football in Europe. Playing in black and white, WAC have defied all expectations to compete in the Austrian Bundesliga and qualify for European competition on multiple occasions.
WAC's promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga in 2012 was a historic moment for Carinthian football, and the club quickly established themselves as competitive regulars rather than relegation fodder. Under coaches including Dietmar Kühbauer, WAC finished second in the Austrian Bundesliga in 2017–18 and qualified for the UEFA Europa League group stage in 2020–21, competing against clubs including Roma, CSKA Sofia, and BSC Young Boys. This extraordinary achievement for a club from a small Austrian provincial town earned WAC enormous respect across European football.
Austrian Bundesliga and Europa League
WAC's 2020–21 Europa League group stage qualification was the pinnacle of the club's European history. Competing against Roma, Young Boys, and CSKA Sofia, WAC performed with credit and demonstrated the quality achievable by a focused, well-coached small-market club. Their Austrian Bundesliga top-three finishes in recent seasons have maintained regular European competition, and the club's ability to compete against clubs with vastly superior financial resources has earned genuine admiration in the football world.
Lavanttal Arena
Wolfsberger AC play at the Lavanttal Arena in Wolfsberg, a compact stadium that holds approximately 7,000 supporters. Despite its modest capacity, the ground generates excellent atmosphere and has hosted Europa League matches that brought European clubs to the small Carinthian valley town. The stadium's intimate setting against the backdrop of the Carinthian Alps provides one of Austrian football's more dramatic and charming venues, and the passion of WAC's local support creates an atmosphere disproportionate to the stadium's modest size.
