Team History

Real Zaragoza – Club History

Real Zaragoza was founded in 1932 in Zaragoza, the capital of the Aragon region and Spain's fifth-largest city, situated on the banks of the Ebro River. The club plays in blue and white stripes and has achieved some remarkable moments in Spanish football, including winning the Copa del Rey on six occasions and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1995 – one of Spanish football's most celebrated European triumphs outside of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Zaragoza's Estadio de La Romareda has been one of Spain's most atmospheric grounds, and the club draws passionate support from across Aragon.

Real Zaragoza's 1994–95 European Cup Winners' Cup campaign was a fairy-tale run. Under coach Víctor Fernández, with players including Juan Señor, Esnaider, and the legendary Nayim, Zaragoza defeated Cheslea in the semi-finals before facing Arsenal in the final in Paris. With the match level in injury time, Nayim scored an audacious long-range lob from near the halfway line over David Seaman's head to win the trophy for Zaragoza – one of European football's most spectacular and celebrated goals.

La Liga and Cup History

Real Zaragoza won their only La Liga title in 1975 and have been consistent top-flight competitors across different eras. Their six Copa del Rey victories reflect genuine cup pedigree, and the European Cup Winners' Cup triumph placed Zaragoza among the select clubs to have won a major European trophy. Financial difficulties in the 2010s led to relegation from La Liga, and the club has been working to return to the top flight from the Segunda División.

Estadio de La Romareda

Real Zaragoza play at the Estadio de La Romareda, a ground with a capacity of approximately 33,000 that has been the club's home since 1957. Plans for a new stadium have been discussed over many years, but La Romareda remains the venue for Segunda División competition and cup ties. The stadium hosted matches at the 1982 FIFA World Cup and has seen some of Spanish football's most memorable occasions during Zaragoza's periods of top-flight and European football.

Legendary Players

Nayim's Cup Winners' Cup final goal is probably the most celebrated moment associated with any Zaragoza player. Juan Señor, Diego, and Marquinos were key figures of the cup-winning era. In earlier eras, Carlos Lapetra was a gifted forward who starred in the 1975 La Liga championship. More recently, Juan Carlos Valerón, Millito (Gabriel Heinze's nickname was wrong - Diego Milito for Zaragoza), and several Spanish internationals have worn the blue and white stripes.
