Team History

Fatih Karagümrük SK – Club History

Fatih Karagümrük is one of Turkey's oldest football clubs, founded in 1926 in the Fatih district of Istanbul, one of the city's most historically significant neighbourhoods on the European side of the Bosphorus. The club's roots are deeply embedded in the Fatih district's working-class communities, and their identity reflects the authentic Istanbul neighbourhoods that predate the modern city. Playing in maroon and blue, Karagümrük spent most of the twentieth century in the lower divisions of Turkish football before their remarkable return to the Süper Lig in 2020 after a 61-year absence.

Karagümrük's long journey back to Turkish top-flight football is one of the sport's most enduring comeback stories. After competing in the Süper Lig briefly in the 1950s and early 1960s, the club dropped through the divisions and spent six decades rebuilding. Their promotion to the Süper Lig in 2020 was celebrated across the Fatih district and brought renewed attention to one of Istanbul's most historic clubs. Their subsequent seasons in the top flight demonstrated the club's ability to compete at the highest level of Turkish football.

Süper Lig Return

Karagümrük's return to the Süper Lig in 2020 was achieved by winning the TFF First League (second division) title. The club's subsequent seasons in the top flight were impressive, with mid-table finishes that surprised many observers given the disparity in resources between Karagümrük and Istanbul's major clubs. Their direct, competitive football and passionate support from the historic Fatih neighbourhood created a genuinely authentic alternative to Istanbul's established clubs in the modern Süper Lig landscape.

Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadyumu / Fatih Vatan Stadyumu

Karagümrük have used multiple grounds for their Süper Lig home matches, including the Atatürk Olympic Stadium and their own Fatih Vatan Stadyumu in Istanbul. The club's preference for the intimate Fatih Vatan ground reflects their community identity, though the club has also utilised larger venues for high-profile matches. Their matchday atmosphere reflects the authentic character of an Istanbul neighbourhood club with genuine roots and history.
