The Valley

London, Floyd Road, Charlton 27,111 capacity

Charlton Athletic FC plays at The Valley, located in Floyd Road, Charlton, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, southeast London. With a capacity of approximately 27,111 spectators, The Valley has been Charlton's home since 1919 and is one of English football's most distinctive grounds — a large bowl-shaped stadium carved partly from a chalk cliff, giving it an unusual sunken appearance unique among English football venues. The famous Valley Road End, where Charlton's most passionate supporters gather, sits in a natural amphitheatre created by the chalk geology of the area, giving the ground a physical character unlike any other in English professional football.

The Valley has one of English football's most remarkable stories attached to it — when Charlton were forced to leave the ground in 1985 due to structural and financial difficulties, sharing grounds with Crystal Palace and West Ham United, the "Valley Party" campaign by supporters became a landmark moment in football supporter history. Fans organised a political campaign to return to The Valley, standing candidates in local elections and generating national media attention. The campaign succeeded: Charlton returned to The Valley in December 1992 to an emotional, sold-out reception that is one of English football's most celebrated homecomings.

The Valley hosted First Division and then Premier League football during Charlton's extended top-flight presence between 1998 and 2007, with the stadium expanded to accommodate larger crowds during the Curbishley era when the club consistently competed in the Premier League. The stadium's current capacity represents significant development from the smaller ground that was reclaimed in 1992. Charlton's Valley is perhaps the ultimate example of a football community's bond with its home — the struggle to return to the ground became a defining chapter in the club's history, and The Valley remains the physical embodiment of what Charlton Athletic means to its community in southeast London.
