Vålerenga IF Fotball – Club History

Vålerenga IF Fotball is one of Norway's most supported and passionate football clubs, founded in 1913 in the Vålerenga district of Oslo. The club, known simply as VIF or Vålerenga, draws enormous support from working-class eastern Oslo communities and has built one of Scandinavia's most authentic and intense supporter cultures. Playing in blue and white, Vålerenga have won multiple Eliteserien titles and Norwegian Cup victories, establishing themselves as one of the most decorated clubs in Norwegian football history with a fan base renowned for its colour, passion, and creativity.

Vålerenga's identity is rooted in the Vålerenga district's working-class communities, and this connection between club and neighbourhood remains one of the most powerful in Nordic football. The club's ultras and supporter groups are among the most active and organised in Scandinavian football, creating spectacular displays and generating an atmosphere that makes Vålerenga matches among the most electric in Norwegian football. This cultural identity has given the club a distinctive character that transcends their league position in any given season.

Eliteserien Championships

Vålerenga have won the Norwegian top division on five occasions, with titles in 1965, 1981, 1983, 1984, and 2005. Their run of back-to-back-to-back titles in 1981, 1983, and 1984 (skipping 1982) was a dominant period in Norwegian football. Their 2005 title was a celebrated modern achievement that brought renewed joy to eastern Oslo. The club has also won the Norwegian Cup multiple times and has regularly competed in European football through their domestic success. Vålerenga's consistent presence in the Eliteserien's upper half reflects their sustained quality.

Intility Arena

Vålerenga moved to the Intility Arena in 2017, leaving their historic Bislett Stadion (where they had groundshared with other Oslo clubs). The new stadium holds approximately 17,000 supporters and is located in the Vålerenga district itself, directly connecting the club to its roots. The modern facility has provided Vålerenga with a home they can call their own, and the community feel of a stadium embedded in the club's historic neighbourhood has been enormously important. European nights and derby matches at Intility Arena have generated some of the finest atmospheres in Norwegian football.

Legendary Players

Vålerenga has produced and attracted outstanding Norwegian football talent. Steffen Iversen was one of Norway's finest strikers and represented Vålerenga and the national team with distinction. Thorstein Helstad was a reliable scorer across multiple spells. In the modern era, goalkeeper Jørgen Skjelvik, midfielder Stefan Strandberg, and forward Mohammed Abdellaoue have been important figures. Frode Johnsen was a prolific scorer and club legend. Manager Ronny Deila, later to work at Celtic and in the United States, developed his reputation partly through work in the Norwegian football system that included connections to Vålerenga's development structure.
