Sampdoria

UC Sampdoria shares its home ground with local rivals Genoa CFC at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, located in the Marassi neighbourhood of Genoa, the capital of Liguria in northwestern Italy. Known affectionately as "Il Ferraris" or "La Gradinata" by supporters, the stadium opened in 1911 — making it one of the oldest football stadiums in Italy still in use — and has a capacity of 36,536. Named after Luigi Ferraris, a Genoese footballer killed in World War I, the ground has witnessed some of Italian football's most dramatic and passionate moments across more than a century of use.

Sampdoria's greatest era at the Ferraris came in the late 1980s and early 1990s under coach Vujadin Boškov, when the club won the Serie A title in 1990–91 and reached the UEFA Champions League final in 1992, where they were defeated by Barcelona. The stadium was filled with delirious supporters during those golden years, and the 1991 Scudetto celebration remains one of the most joyous days in Genoese football history. The Ferraris also hosted a group stage match at Italia 90 and has been the stage for countless memorable European nights for both Sampdoria and Genoa over the decades.

The Luigi Ferraris stadium has been subject to ongoing discussions about renovation or replacement for many years. Both Sampdoria and Genoa have expressed a desire to modernise the ground, with various proposals for redevelopment emerging periodically. The stadium's age means that facilities do not meet contemporary standards for top-level European football, and the question of who owns and maintains the ground adds complexity to any improvement project. Despite its limitations, the Ferraris remains one of Italy's most atmospheric football venues, and matchdays in Marassi — particularly when the ground is packed for a derby between the two Genoese clubs — are among the most intense experiences in Italian football.
