Beşiktaş JK – Club History

Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü, founded in 1903 in the Beşiktaş district on the European shore of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, holds the distinction of being Turkey's oldest sports club and the third member of Turkish football's dominant triumvirate alongside Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. Beşiktaş have been regular participants in UEFA competition throughout the Champions League and Europa League era. Their most celebrated European achievement came in the 2017–18 Champions League, when they qualified from their group — containing Monaco, Porto, and Leipzig — a remarkable feat that announced the club to a new generation of European football supporters. Beşiktaş play their home matches at Vodafone Park, a magnificent 42,000-capacity stadium opened in 2016 on the site of the club's historic İnönü Stadium in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul. The ground, built at considerable cost and with careful attention to architectural detail, is one of the finest football stadiums in Turkey and one of the most dramatically sited in all of European football — located directly adjacent to the Bosphorus waterway with stunning views over the water towards the Asian shore of Istanbul. Legendary Players

Beşiktaş have attracted and developed numerous distinguished players across their history. Süleyman Seba, the long-serving club president who transformed Beşiktaş into a modern sporting institution, remains one of the most revered figures in Turkish sport. On the pitch, German legend Lothar Matthäus played for Beşiktaş in the twilight of his career, while Brazilian midfielder Mirel Radzic and several South American internationals have brought their quality to the Bosphorus. More recently, Ricardo Quaresma — the elaborate, skilful Portuguese winger — became a cult hero at the club, as did former Arsenal striker Dorin Gojkovic. In the modern era, players like Kerem Aktürkoğlu have continued the tradition of home-grown talent shining at the highest level.
