Hillsborough Stadium
Sheffield Wednesday FC plays at Hillsborough Stadium, located in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield, England. With a capacity of approximately 39,732 spectators, Hillsborough is one of England's largest club stadiums and one of the most historically significant. The ground has been Sheffield Wednesday's home since 1899 and has hosted numerous FA Cup semi-finals and other major football occasions throughout its history. The Hillsborough disaster of 15 April 1989 — when 97 Liverpool supporters died in a crowd crush during an FA Cup semi-final — is the most terrible event in British sporting history and has profoundly shaped both stadium safety legislation and the broader history of English football.
The Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath defined the stadium's place in history beyond football. The Taylor Report, commissioned following the disaster, led to the requirement for all-seated stadiums in the top two English divisions and fundamentally transformed British football ground safety. The long struggle for justice by the Hillsborough families, finally resolved by inquests in 2016 which found that the 97 victims were unlawfully killed, and the subsequent criminal proceedings, ensured that Hillsborough and what happened there remained a major topic in British public life for over three decades. A permanent memorial at the stadium honours all 97 victims.
Beyond its tragic history, Hillsborough has been an important venue for English football, hosting FA Cup semi-finals as recently as the 2000s and serving as the setting for Sheffield Wednesday's past glories in the First Division and European competition. The club won the League Cup twice in 1991 and 1993 and the FA Cup in 1935. The ground's large capacity — significant for a Championship club — means that when Sheffield Wednesday are performing well, Hillsborough can generate one of English football's most impressive atmospheres. The ongoing development of the club under new ownership includes plans for stadium improvements that respect the ground's complex and emotionally charged history.
