Olympiacos FC – Club History
Olympiacos Football Club was founded on 10 July 1925 in Piraeus, the port city adjacent to Athens that serves as Greece's gateway to the sea. From the very beginning, Olympiacos was conceived as the club of the working-class harbour workers of Piraeus — a club for the people, built with passion and pride rather than aristocratic patronage. Their distinctive red and white colours and their ferocious fanbase from across Greece's shipping and industrial heartland have made Olympiacos not merely a football club but a cultural institution of immense significance in Greek life. They are the most successful club in Greek football history, and their dominance of the domestic game has been so complete as to be almost without parallel in any European football nation.
Olympiacos's rivalry with AEK Athens and Panathinaikos — forming the so-called "Eternal Triangle" of Greek football — defines much of the cultural landscape of Greek sport. These three clubs have competed for supremacy since the 1930s, with Olympiacos winning the vast majority of the contests. The club's home in Piraeus gives them a working-class authenticity and a street-level passion that has always distinguished them from their more bourgeois Athens rivals. In European competition, Olympiacos have been regular participants in the Champions League group stages and have produced some remarkable results against elite European clubs.
Super League Era & Titles
Olympiacos have won the Greek Super League (formerly known as Alpha Ethniki) 47 times — a record that dwarfs any rival's achievements and makes them the most successful Greek football club in history. Their unprecedented run of 29 consecutive league titles from 1997 to 2025 is one of the most extraordinary streaks of domestic dominance in the history of European football. During this period, Greek football became essentially a one-team league, with Olympiacos so far ahead of their competitors in financial resources, squad quality, and organisational efficiency that they could not be meaningfully challenged.
Beyond their league dominance, Olympiacos have won the Greek Cup 29 times. In European competition, their greatest achievement came in 2024 when they won the UEFA Europa Conference League — their first European trophy and a milestone that brought jubilation to Piraeus and across Greece. In the Champions League, they famously defeated Arsenal in the round of 16 in 2015 with a stunning last-minute goal from Kostas Fortounis, one of the most dramatic results in the competition's recent history. Their regular participation in European group stages has given them exposure at the continental level that their domestic dominance makes somewhat necessary.
Stadium
Olympiacos play their home matches at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, one of the finest football grounds in the Balkans and wider southeastern Europe. The current stadium was completely rebuilt between 2002 and 2004 as part of the preparations for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, and has a capacity of approximately 32,000 spectators. Named after the Greek revolutionary hero Georgios Karaiskakis, the stadium is a modern, compact arena with steep stands that create an intensely atmospheric environment on matchday. The noise generated by Olympiacos supporters at Karaiskakis Stadium is renowned across European football as among the most intimidating home atmospheres on the continent.
Most Famous Players
Olympiacos's history includes a remarkable array of Greek football legends as well as significant foreign talent who made their names in the red and white. Takis Lemonis, Kostas Nestoridis, and Mimis Domazos are celebrated figures from the club's earlier eras. In the modern period, Predrag Đorđević became one of the most beloved midfielders in the club's history. Rivaldo, the Brazilian World Cup winner and former Ballon d'Or champion, spent time at Olympiacos in the twilight of his career and brought extraordinary glamour to the club. Kostas Fortounis — who scored the legendary goal against Arsenal in 2015 — is perhaps the most iconic modern Olympiacos player for the Greek fanbase. Ayoub El Kaabi, the Moroccan striker, was a key figure in the 2024 Conference League triumph.
