Panathinaikos FC – Club History
Panathinaikos Football Club, founded in 1908 in Athens, is one of Greece's most successful and storied football clubs and a name that resonates across European football history. Based in the Greek capital, the club is part of the larger Panathinaikos sports association — itself one of the oldest sports organisations in Greece — and plays in a distinctive green and white that has become synonymous with Greek football excellence. With a fanbase that is passionate, numerous, and deeply invested in the club's fortunes, Panathinaikos are more than just a football club: they are a social and cultural institution that has shaped the sporting identity of Athens for more than a century.
The club's name — derived from the Greek for 'all of Athens' — reflects its founding ambition to represent the entire Greek capital rather than a particular neighbourhood or demographic. That inclusive, civic identity has always been central to Panathinaikos's character, and despite the intensely tribal nature of Greek football fandom, the club has maintained a sense of representing Athens as a whole rather than merely one faction within it.
Greek Super League Success
Panathinaikos are the second most successful club in Greek football history, having won the Greek Super League championship more than 20 times. Their domestic record spans the entire history of Greek organised football, from the early championship years of the pre-war period through the post-war reorganisation of the league to the modern professional era. Their most sustained period of dominance came during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, when they won multiple consecutive titles and established themselves as clearly Greece's leading club. They have also won the Greek Cup numerous times, completing domestic doubles and trebles that confirm their status as one of Greek football's elite institutions.
1971 European Cup Final
Panathinaikos's greatest achievement and most celebrated moment in European football came on 2 June 1971, when they reached the final of the European Cup at Wembley Stadium — the only Greek club ever to do so. Their run to the final, which included victories over Slovan Bratislava, Red Star Belgrade, and Everton, was a remarkable feat that brought Greek football to the attention of the entire continent. In the final, they faced Ajax — Johan Cruyff's brilliant Dutch side at the beginning of their total football dominance — and were defeated 2–0 in a match that, while ending in defeat, confirmed that Panathinaikos were a genuine European force. The team was managed by the legendary Hungarian coach Ferenc Puskás, whose experience and tactical sophistication had guided the club through its most glorious European campaign.
OAKA Stadium & Apostolos Nikolaidis
Panathinaikos have played their home matches at various venues across their history, including the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium — their traditional home in the Nea Filothei area of Athens — and the much larger Olympic Athletic Centre of Athens (OAKA) for major European fixtures and important domestic matches. The OAKA, with its capacity of approximately 69,000, hosted significant Panathinaikos European nights during the Champions League era, while the club's traditional home ground provides a more intimate, atmospheric setting for regular league fixtures.
Legendary Players
Panathinaikos have produced and attracted numerous distinguished players. Mimis Domazos — the elegant midfielder known as 'the Commander' — is regarded as one of the greatest Greek footballers of all time and the defining player of the 1971 European Cup final team. Demis Nikolaidis, the Greek international striker, was a hero of the club's late 1990s and early 2000s resurgence. In the modern era, players like Dimitris Salpingidis and Kostas Katsouranis represented the Greek World Cup tradition that had Panathinaikos at its heart. The club continues to develop talented Greek footballers while attracting international quality to maintain their competitive standing.
