Stade Rennais FC – Club History
Stade Rennais Football Club, founded in 1901 in Rennes, the capital of the Brittany region in northwest France, is one of French football's oldest and most historically significant clubs. Known as "Les Rouges et Noirs" for their red and black colours, and representing the proud Breton identity of their region, Rennes have a devoted following that combines the passionate football culture of a major French city with Brittany's fierce sense of regional identity. The club plays at the Roazhon Park (formerly the Stade de la Route de Lorient).
Rennes' most significant modern period came in the early 2000s and again in the late 2010s under the ownership of the Pinault family (of the luxury goods empire Kering, which owns Gucci, Balenciaga, and other luxury brands). The Pinault investment brought stability and ambition. Rennes won the Coupe de France in 1965, 1971, and most recently in 2019 — their first cup triumph in 48 years — after a dramatic penalty shootout against PSG in the Stade de France. The 2019 trophy qualified them for the UEFA Europa League, marking a new era of European football for the club. Rennes have since become regular European participants, featuring in the Champions League group stage in 2020–21.
Ligue 1 Era & Titles
Rennes have never won a Ligue 1 title. Their best league finish was second place in 1964–65 and again in 2021–22. They have won the Coupe de France three times — in 1965, 1971, and 2019. Rennes have never won the Trophée des Champions.
While lacking a Ligue 1 title, Rennes have established themselves as consistent European qualifiers and one of French football's most admired clubs for their philosophy, youth development, and playing style. Their qualification for the Champions League in 2020 was a landmark achievement, and they remain one of France's most ambitious mid-sized clubs.
Stadium
Rennes play at the Roazhon Park (the Breton language name for Rennes is "Roazhon"), located in the city of Rennes, Brittany. With a current capacity of approximately 29,778, the Roazhon Park was renovated between 2013 and 2020, becoming a modern, covered, purpose-built football stadium with excellent atmosphere. The name reflects the club's commitment to their Breton identity. Average attendances have improved significantly in recent years, regularly exceeding 25,000 for Ligue 1 fixtures and selling out for European nights.
Most Famous Players
Rennes has developed and sold numerous talents over the years. Ousmane Dembélé — the French winger who joined Barcelona for a then-record €105 million in 2017 — came through the Rennes academy and is the most famous graduate. Eduardo Camavinga, the French teenager who joined Real Madrid in 2021, also developed at Rennes and became one of the most sought-after teenage talents in Europe. Serhou Guirassy and Mathys Tel are other recent notable products. Goalkeeper Steve Mandanda and midfielder Sylvain Wiltord were important in earlier eras. João Félix had a loan spell. Benjamin Bourigeaud and Martin Terrier have been consistent performers in recent Ligue 1 seasons.
