SD Eibar – Club History
Sociedad Deportiva Eibar was founded in 1940 in Eibar, a small industrial city in the Basque Country with a population of around 27,000. Their remarkable 2014 La Liga promotion – achieved as Spain's smallest city to have a top-flight team – made Eibar one of European football's most charming underdogs. Playing in blue and red, the Armeros (Gunsmiths, reflecting Eibar's traditional arms-manufacturing heritage) competed in La Liga for seven consecutive seasons from 2014 to 2021, a sustained achievement that far exceeded expectations and earned the club a devoted following beyond Spain.
Eibar's La Liga survival for seven seasons was built on excellent organisation, the financial model of having thousands of small shareholders including fans from across the world, and consistently punching above their weight. Their Ipurua Municipal Stadium, with a capacity of just 7,083, was La Liga's smallest ground but generated an intense atmosphere that unsettled visiting teams repeatedly.
