Team History

Nottingham Forest Football Club – Club History

Nottingham Forest Football Club was founded in 1865, making them one of the oldest professional football clubs in the world. The club won the FA Cup in 1898 and their early history was respectable but unspectacular. For most of the 20th century, Forest existed as a First Division club without lasting championship success. All of that changed with the arrival of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor as management team in January 1975. What followed was perhaps the most extraordinary story in English – arguably world – football history.

Clough took Forest from the Second Division to the First Division title in 1977–78, in only their second season back in the top flight. He then did the unthinkable: Forest won the European Cup in back-to-back seasons, defeating Malmö in 1979 and Hamburg in 1980, becoming the first English club other than Liverpool to win European football's biggest prize. The achievement of winning two European Cups as a provincial English club is one of the most remarkable in the history of the game.

Premier League Era & Titles

Nottingham Forest were founding members of the Premier League in 1992 but were relegated at the end of their first season and spent the best part of 23 years outside the top flight. Their return came under Steve Cooper, who led Forest to a dramatic play-off final victory over Sheffield United in 2022 to earn promotion. They have since established themselves back in the Premier League, surviving in dramatic circumstances in 2023 before a more comfortable campaign in 2023–24 under Nuno Espírito Santo. Forest's major honours include 1 First Division title (1977–78), 2 European Cups (1979, 1980), 4 League Cups (including three under Clough), and 1 FA Cup (1898).

Stadium

Nottingham Forest play at The City Ground, their home since 1898. Located on the south bank of the River Trent, immediately opposite Notts County's Meadow Lane ground, The City Ground has a capacity of approximately 30,445 after recent redevelopment. The ground underwent significant renovation with a new stand completed in 2023, and further expansion plans are being considered as part of the club's Premier League ambitions. The City Ground has a historic and passionate atmosphere, and its location beside the river makes it one of the most picturesque grounds in English football.

Most Famous Players

The Clough era produced some of England's finest players. Peter Shilton was one of the world's best goalkeepers during Forest's European glory years. John Robertson was a creative winger who scored the only goal in both European Cup finals. Trevor Francis became Britain's first £1 million transfer player when he joined Forest in 1979 and scored the winning goal in the first European Cup triumph. Viv Anderson became the first Black player to represent England at senior level while at Forest. Stuart Pearce, known as "Psycho," was an iconic left-back and captain for many years. In the modern era, Roy Keane (before his Manchester United move) was an outstanding midfielder, while Stuart Pearce, Ian Storey-Moore, and more recently Morgan Gibbs-White and Brennan Johnson have been beloved figures.

Key Milestones

Brian Clough's back-to-back European Cup wins in 1979 and 1980 stand as the club's supreme achievements. The 1977–78 First Division title, won at the first attempt after promotion, remains one of the most stunning championship triumphs in English football. Forest's promotion via the 2022 play-off final, followed by their survival in the Premier League, represents a remarkable return to the top flight for a club synonymous with one of football's greatest ever managers.
