Rio Ave FC – Club History

Rio Ave FC was founded in 1939 in Vila do Conde, a coastal town in northern Portugal at the mouth of the Ave River, from which the club takes its name. Playing in white and green, Rio Ave have been one of Portugal's most consistent over-achievers in Primeira Liga competition, regularly competing for European places despite representing a modest-sized community. The club's stadium, the Estádio dos Arcos, sits in the charming Atlantic coastal town and provides a pleasant setting for Portuguese top-flight football.

Rio Ave's most celebrated achievement came when they qualified for the UEFA Europa League on multiple occasions through strong Primeira Liga finishes. Under coaches including Carlos Carvalhal and Pedro Martins, the club produced some of their finest football and competed in European group stages.
