Signal Iduna Park
Signal Iduna Park is the thunderous home of Borussia Dortmund, located at Strobelallee 50 in the Westfalenhalle district of Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. The stadium holds 81,365 spectators, making it the largest football ground in Germany and the seventh largest in Europe. Originally opened in 1974 as the Westfalenstadion for the FIFA World Cup, it served as a venue for four matches during that tournament and was subsequently expanded progressively to its current scale. The ground has been known as Signal Iduna Park since 2005 following a naming rights agreement with the insurance company, though it is still affectionately called the Westfalenstadion by supporters.
The defining feature of Signal Iduna Park is the Sudtribune - the South Stand - which is the largest standing terrace in European football, holding over 24,000 standing spectators on match days. When packed to capacity, the Sudtribune creates a wall of yellow and black that generates one of football's greatest atmospheric spectacles, the noise and visual impact earning the stadium its nickname "the Cathedral". The ground hosted matches at the 1988 European Championship, the 2006 FIFA World Cup including the semi-final between Germany and Italy, and the 2024 UEFA European Championship. Legendary players including Michael Zorc, Matthias Sammer, Stefan Effenberg, and the attacking partnership of Karl-Heinz Riedle and Heiko Herrlich in the Champions League-winning era have all become synonymous with the ground.
Borussia Dortmund's Champions League triumph in 1997 and their domestic dominance under Jurgen Klopp from 2010-2012, winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles with a thrilling brand of pressing football, elevated Signal Iduna Park to iconic status. Under Klopp, the stadium generated some of the most intense and joyful atmospheres in European football. The current stadium's full capacity of 81,365 applies for domestic matches, while UEFA competition regulations reduce this to 66,099 all-seated. The record attendance stands at 83,000, set in 2003. Signal Iduna Park is consistently cited as the finest matchday experience in the Bundesliga.
