Stadio Comunale Via del Mare

Stadio Comunale Via del Mare

Lecce, Viale dello Stadio 40,800 capacity

The Stadio Comunale Via del Mare is the home of US Lecce, located at Viale dello Stadio in the city of Lecce, in the Apulia region of south-eastern Italy. The stadium holds 40,800 spectators and has been Lecce's home since its inauguration in 1966. The ground was built on the northern outskirts of the historic baroque city and takes its informal name from its original address on Via del Mare, the road leading to the Adriatic coast. Despite its substantial capacity, attendances vary considerably based on the club's league status, with full houses rare outside the most important fixtures.

US Lecce are one of Italian football's most distinctive provincial clubs, representing the Salento peninsula - the "heel" of the Italian boot - and serving a region that has traditionally been one of Italy's most economically challenged. The club has made several appearances in Serie A over the decades, most recently in consecutive seasons from 2022 onwards, bringing top-flight football back to Puglia after periods in the lower divisions. Lecce have produced talented players from their local academy and drawn passionate support from across the Salento area. The club's survival battles in Serie A have typically been achieved against the odds and with limited resources compared to the northern Italian powers.

The Via del Mare stadium's considerable capacity relative to the club's profile reflects an era when Lecce had genuine top-flight aspirations and broader regional support. The ground's four stands have been progressively upgraded, with the main stand and curve providing the most modern facilities. The Curva Sud is the home of the most vocal supporters. Lecce's unique position as the standard-bearer for football in one of Italy's most culturally rich but economically peripheral regions gives the stadium a significance beyond its modest football stature. The baroque architecture of the city surrounding the ground, including the historic old town with its ornate stone buildings, creates a distinctive and beautiful backdrop to professional football in the deep south of Italy.
