Groupama Stadium
The Groupama Stadium is the modern home of Olympique Lyonnais, located at 10 avenue Simone Veil in Decines-Charpieu, an eastern suburb of Lyon in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region. The stadium holds 59,186 spectators and opened in January 2016, replacing the historic Stade de Gerland where Lyon had played since 1926. Built at a cost of approximately 450 million euros and funded entirely by the club under president Jean-Michel Aulas, it was the first stadium in France built without public funding. Designed by Populous, the ground was intended to deliver a premium matchday experience and to serve as a major events venue for concerts and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Olympique Lyonnais are one of France's most decorated clubs, having won seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles between 2002 and 2008 - an achievement that remains unmatched in the modern French game. The club produced and developed world-class players during this dominant era including Karim Benzema, Hatem Ben Arfa, Florent Malouda, and later Alexandre Lacazette, Nabil Fekir, and Moussa Dembele. The Groupama Stadium inherited a Champions League tradition from the Gerland, and Lyon have competed at the highest European level from their new ground, including a remarkable semi-final appearance in the 2019-20 tournament. The stadium hosted seven matches at the 2024 Paris Olympics, including football finals.
The Groupama Stadium's design features a striking silver roof canopy and a tight, steeply raked bowl that creates an electric atmosphere for European nights and big Ligue 1 fixtures. The north end houses Lyon's most vocal supporter groups, the Bad Gones ultras, whose reputation for passionate support is well established. Following the acquisition of a controlling stake in OL Groupe by American businessman John Textor in 2022, the club has invested significantly in both the squad and the stadium infrastructure. The ground holds a record capacity of over 59,000 and regularly sells out for Champions League matches and top domestic fixtures.
