Liverpool Football Club – Club History
Liverpool Football Club was founded in 1892 following a dispute between Everton and their landlord at Anfield. The club joined the Football League in 1893 and quickly rose to become one of the great powers of English football. Liverpool won their first league championship in 1900–01 and established themselves as a periodic First Division force in the early 20th century. The club's true golden age began under manager Bill Shankly, who took over in 1959 and completely transformed the club, building the foundation for the most successful period in English football history.
Under Shankly, Liverpool won the Second Division (1962), two First Division titles (1964, 1966), and two FA Cups. Shankly built a culture, a philosophy, and a connection with the fans that endures to this day. His successor Bob Paisley surpassed even Shankly's achievements, winning six league titles, three European Cups, three League Cups, and one UEFA Cup in just nine seasons (1974–83). The 1970s and 1980s were Liverpool's era of total dominance in English and European football.
Premier League Era & Titles
Liverpool were founding members of the Premier League in 1992 but endured a prolonged wait for their 19th league title. Under Jürgen Klopp, appointed in 2015, Liverpool transformed into one of the most exciting and successful sides in world football. They won the UEFA Champions League in 2019 (defeating Tottenham) and then the Premier League in 2019–20 with a record-equalling 32-match unbeaten home run, winning with seven games to spare. Liverpool have won 19 First Division/Premier League titles in total, 8 FA Cups, 10 League Cups (the most of any club), 6 European Cups/UEFA Champions League titles, 3 UEFA Cups, and 4 UEFA Super Cups.
Stadium
Liverpool have played at Anfield since the club's formation in 1892. Located in the Anfield area of Liverpool, the stadium has undergone significant expansion in recent years, with the Main Stand redeveloped and expanded in 2016 and the Anfield Road Stand expanded and reopened in 2023, taking the capacity to approximately 61,000+. Anfield is one of the most famous football stadiums in the world, and the atmosphere generated by The Kop – particularly during European nights – is legendary. The famous anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone" echoes through Anfield before every home game.
Most Famous Players
Liverpool's list of legendary players is extraordinary. Kenny Dalglish is widely regarded as the greatest player in the club's history, a brilliant forward who later managed the club to further success. Roger Hunt, Ian Rush (the club's all-time record goalscorer with 346 goals), John Barnes, Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard (the inspirational captain of the famous 2005 Champions League triumph), and Michael Owen are all Anfield legends. In the Klopp era, Mohamed Salah became one of the world's best players, setting numerous Premier League scoring records, while Virgil van Dijk transformed the defence and Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino completed one of the most devastating front threes in the game's history.
Key Milestones
Liverpool's 2005 Champions League final comeback from 3–0 down against AC Milan in Istanbul – winning on penalties – is widely regarded as the greatest comeback in sporting history. The 2019–20 Premier League title ended a 30-year wait. The club's six European Cups make them the most successful English club in the competition's history. The Hillsborough disaster of 1989, in which 97 Liverpool supporters lost their lives, is a tragedy that shaped the club and the city, and the pursuit of justice for the victims was finally concluded with a historic inquest verdict in 2016.
