Team History

Antalyaspor – Club History

Antalyaspor was founded in 1966 in Antalya, Turkey's major Mediterranean resort city on the southern Turkish Riviera. The Akrepler (Scorpions), named for the club's scorpion badge, have been a consistent Turkish Süper Lig presence across multiple decades, representing a city primarily known for tourism rather than football. Playing in red and white stripes, Antalyaspor have attracted players from across the world to their stunning Mediterranean setting, including some big-name late-career signings that have generated international attention and given the club a cosmopolitan character unusual for a Turkish provincial side.

Antalyaspor's history has been characterised by consistent Süper Lig competition and the occasional controversial marquee signing. The club have used their Mediterranean appeal and unique lifestyle offering to attract players who might otherwise not consider Turkish football. Most famously, when Samuel Eto'o joined the club in 2015, the multi-time Champions League winner's presence brought global media attention to Antalya. The club's beautiful setting, mild climate, and resort-town character make it an attractive destination for players winding down their careers.

Süper Lig Presence

Antalyaspor have spent extended periods in the Turkish Süper Lig and have been regular top-half competitors. The club have qualified for European competition on occasion through their league performances and have generally maintained their place among Turkish football's established second tier, challenging the Istanbul dominance without consistently threatening for the championship. Their Antalya Stadyumu, set in the coastal city, provides a beautiful but sometimes under-attended venue for top-flight Turkish football.

Antalya Stadyumu

Antalyaspor play at the Antalya Stadyumu (Mardan Sports Complex), a modern facility with a capacity of approximately 33,000. Located in the resort city, the stadium benefits from one of the most beautiful settings in Turkish football, with the Mediterranean and Taurus Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. The ground has been the venue for Antalyaspor's Süper Lig and European matches, and its facilities reflect the investment in sports infrastructure that Antalya has undertaken as part of its broader development as a major Turkish city.
