Wohninvest Weserstadion
The Wohninvest Weserstadion is the evocative home of Werder Bremen, situated on the banks of the Weser river in the heart of the city of Bremen. The stadium holds 42,100 spectators for Bundesliga matches and occupies a site that has been associated with Werder and football since 1909, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied top-flight football grounds in Germany. The current structure has been progressively developed over many decades, with the most recent major renovation completed in 2011. Known by various commercial names over the years, the ground has been the Wohninvest Weserstadion since 2019, while supporters continue to refer to it simply as the Weser-Stadion.
Werder Bremen are one of the most successful clubs in German football history, having won four Bundesliga titles and six DFB-Pokal trophies, as well as the Cup Winners' Cup in 1992. The stadium was the home of the club's greatest era under coach Otto Rehhagel in the 1980s and 1990s, when players including Karl-Heinz Riedle, Marco Bode, Claudio Pizarro, and later Miroslav Klose brought sustained Bundesliga success and European glory to the Weser banks. The stadium's location directly beside the river gives it an atmospheric riverside setting, and the proximity of the water creates a distinctive backdrop on matchdays. The Weser-Stadion hosted matches at the 1974 FIFA World Cup and Euro 1988.
Bremen's financial difficulties in the 2010s led to two relegations to the 2. Bundesliga, with the club returning to the top flight in 2022 after a two-year absence. The Wohninvest Weserstadion remained a constant through this difficult period, sustained by the passionate and loyal Werder fanbase. The north stand standing area is the spiritual heart of the ground and generates the most vocal support. The stadium's riverside location makes it one of the most picturesque in German football, and plans for a new or significantly renovated stadium on the same site are being explored. Werder's current Bundesliga status and their tradition of producing attacking, technically accomplished football makes the Weser-Stadion one of Germany's great football destinations.
